What is GTA III?

Grand Theft Auto III is the game that pushed the series into a full 3D open world. You play as Claude, a silent protagonist who gets double-crossed by his girlfriend Catalina during a heist and left for dead. He survives, and the story follows his climb through the Liberty City underworld as he takes jobs from the crime families, syndicates and cartels that run the town.

The city is yours to roam. You take on story missions, hijack almost any car you can pull a driver out of, and try to shake the cops when your wanted level starts to climb. Steal the wrong ride in front of a patrol and things get loud fast. It is a big, messy sandbox, and most of the fun is in how you cause trouble inside it.

Built-in cheat codes

GTA III ships with its own cheat codes, the same ones players have used since the PC and console days. These are part of the game, not a hack or a tampered file. You enter them during play with the on-screen buttons or a connected gamepad, and they take effect right away.

One thing to remember: because these codes run in the offline single-player game, they are safe to use, but they can switch off achievements and now and then mess with a save. Keep a separate save file if you like to experiment. There is more on that in the tips below.

Is it on Google Play? A paid game

Grand Theft Auto III is a paid Rockstar release, not a free-to-play app. It turns up on Google Play at times, and at other times it does not. Rockstar has been rotating its classic mobile ports on and off the store; Vice City, for one, was delisted back in October 2024, and fans keep waiting on news about a Definitive Edition reaching phones.

How to install GTA III APK + OBB

This one comes in two parts: the APK and the OBB data folder. The whole thing takes a few minutes.

1. Tap the green Download APK button at the top of this page to grab the APK and the Data/OBB file.
2. Allow installation from unknown sources for your browser or file manager (Settings → Security).
3. Install the APK, but do not open it yet.
4. Unzip the OBB data into Android/obb/com.rockstar.gta3 so the game can find it.
5. Launch the game and let it load Liberty City.

Tips before you play

• Save before big missions. GTA III can be brutal, and a failed mission often means a long drive back.
• Use cheat codes on a spare save. They can turn off achievements and once in a while corrupt progress, so keep your main run clean.
• Sort out your controls early. The touch layout works fine, but a Bluetooth gamepad makes the driving and shooting far easier.
• Grab body armor and health before a shootout instead of leaning on a mid-fight cheat.
