What is Viber?

Viber, now branded Rakuten Viber Messenger, is a free messaging and calling app that runs over your internet connection. The Android package is com.viber.voip and the developer is Viber Media S.à r.l., part of the Rakuten group. You send text messages, share photos, videos and files, and make one-on-one or group voice and video calls to other Viber users. Personal chats are protected with end-to-end encryption, so only you and the person you are talking to can read them. It is cross-platform: the same account works on Android, iPhone, Windows and macOS, so a chat you start on your phone continues on your desktop.

Is Viber free? What costs money

Yes, Viber is free. Messages, voice calls and video calls between Viber users cost nothing beyond the internet traffic they use, on Wi-Fi and on mobile data alike. Two things do carry a price, and both are server-side services rather than app features: Viber Out, which lets you call regular landline and mobile numbers that are not on Viber, and some premium sticker packs in the sticker market. Because these run on Viber's servers, no modified file can turn them on for free, and there is nothing locked inside the app to begin with. That is why every "Viber mod" or "unlocked" build you see is either a repackaged copy that risks your account or a fake carrying malware. We hand you the plain official APK instead.

How to download and install the Viber APK

2. Allow installation from unknown sources for your browser or file manager (Settings → Security).

APK vs Google Play

For most people Google Play is the simplest way to install Viber and keep it updated automatically. A direct APK is useful in a few cases: a phone without Google services, a manual update you want to apply yourself before Play pushes it, or rolling back to an earlier build after a change you did not like. One thing to know when you update in place: the signature of the APK must match the version already on your phone, or Android will refuse to install over it.
