There are 70+ creatures to pick from. Dinosaurs like the T-Rex and Spinosaurus, modern animals, and mythical monsters such as the Hydra and the Minotaur all fight under the same physics engine. Bigger is not always better: a wall of cheap units can drag down a single giant, and terrain changes everything.

The game runs in two modes. Campaign gives you set missions with a budget and a goal, so you have to build a winning army for the cash you are given. Sandbox drops all limits, any creature, any number, any matchup you feel like testing.

Unit Creator: build your own monster

The Unit Creator is the part of the game the ranked results barely mention, and it is the most fun. You take body parts from different creatures and bolt them together, a dinosaur head, a spider's legs, whatever combination you want, to make a hybrid that exists nowhere else.

You can also strap weapons straight onto animals: cannons, guns and other hardware turn a plain beast into a mobile turret. Save your creations and they show up as normal units in Campaign and Sandbox, ready to throw into the next fight.

• In Campaign, read the level budget first. Cheap ranged units in numbers often beat one expensive giant, mass and range win more fights than raw size.
• Use Sandbox as your testing ground. Try an army composition there before you spend a campaign attempt on it.
• Build a hybrid that puts a long-range weapon on a heavy, tanky body. It soaks up hits at the front while it shoots.
• Use the terrain. High ground and choke points let a smaller force hold against a larger one, so place your ranged units where they can fire without being rushed.
