What is Getting Over It?

You control Diogenes, a man stuck waist-deep in a metal cauldron, holding a heavy hammer. You move only by swinging that hammer with one finger, hook a rock, push off a ledge, drag yourself upward. The whole game is one long climb up a mountain of junk: trees, furniture, pipes, a giant orange traffic cone. As you play, Foddy talks to you through a calm voiceover, philosophy, quotes and dry commentary on failure.

The game is an homage to Sexy Hiking, a rough 2002 climbing game, rebuilt with real physics. It is short on paper and endless in practice. The median player finishes in about five hours, but one bad swing can drop you from the top back to the very bottom in a second. That brutal design is why it became a meme: streamers rage-quit it on camera, and speedrunners now finish the climb in under two minutes.

Here is the honest part about the Android port. On PC you move the hammer with a mouse; on a phone you drag it with your finger, and that is harder. It is the main complaint in the Google Play reviews, and it is real, not a bug you can fix. A few things genuinely help:

• Move slowly and deliberately. Fast, tiny finger jerks often don’t register cleanly, drag the hammer in slow, confident arcs instead.
• Play on a tablet or a big screen if you can. More surface area means more control over each swing, and fewer accidental slips.
• Learn the early landmarks. The first few obstacles, the tree, the bucket, the anvil, become checkpoints in your head. Knowing them by heart steadies your climb.
• Don’t play angry. Every big fall in this game happens on a rushed, frustrated swing. Put it down for a minute and come back with a steady hand.
