Island APK — Clone, Isolate and Freeze Apps
Additional information about Island APK — Clone, Isolate and Freeze Apps
com.oasisfeng.islandThe description of Island APK — Clone, Isolate and Freeze Apps
Island APK is a free, open-source utility by Oasis Feng that clones, isolates, freezes and hides apps on Android. It does this through the built-in work profile, so you do not need root for the basic setup. Our editors installed and tested it on real Android devices before publishing. This is not a mod and not a hack: it is a small system tool, about 3.4 MB, that puts the apps you pick into a separate sandbox on the same phone. Below is what it actually does, what it does not do, and how to set it up.
What is the Island app?
Island is an app manager built on Android's managed profile: the same work-profile feature companies use to keep business apps apart from personal ones. It creates an isolated sandbox for the apps you choose and for the data those apps store. Nothing leaves that sandbox unless you allow it.
The project is free and open-source under the Apache 2.0 licence. You can get it from Google Play or from F-Droid, where it ships as a community fork called Insular. Either way it is the same tool, not a paid copy of it.
What Island can do
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Clone | Run a second copy of an app with a different account, for example two WhatsApp logins, a spare Instagram or two game accounts on one phone. |
| Isolate | Keep an app in a sandbox with no access to your contacts, call log or photos outside it. |
| Freeze | Fully block an app's background activity and hide its icon, which saves battery and memory. |
| Hide | Remove selected apps from the app drawer without deleting them. |
Do you need root?
No, not for the basic setup. This is the point people get wrong most often. Island runs as the admin of an Android work profile, and that profile is a standard part of the system, so cloning, isolating and freezing Play Store apps all work without root.
Root matters for one advanced case only: cloning an app that is not installed from Google Play. If you need that, you can use root, Shizuku or the separate Extension Pack instead. For everything most people want, a normal phone with no root is enough. The idea that Island always needs a rooted device is simply wrong.
How to set up Island
- Download the APK from this page and allow installation from unknown sources for your browser or file manager (Settings → Security).
- Open Island and run the setup wizard. It asks to create the work profile and grant a few permissions; on a normal phone this needs no root.
- Pick the apps you want to clone or freeze from the list. Island places them in the sandbox and does the rest.
- To freeze an app later, long-press it inside Island and choose Freeze; tap it again to wake it up.
New to sideloading? Our APK install guide walks through the same steps with screenshots. The file is about 3.4 MB and needs Android 7.0 or newer.
Why use Island
- Two accounts, one phone. Sign in to a second social, messaging or game account without carrying a spare device.
- More privacy. Nosy apps in the sandbox cannot read your main contacts, calls or photos.
- Longer battery. Freezing apps you rarely open stops them running in the background and waking the phone.
- A cleaner drawer. Hide the apps you want to keep but do not want on screen.
One honest note: some of this depends on your Android version and your phone maker. A few OEM skins limit work-profile features or handle frozen apps differently, so results vary between devices. Island does not encrypt your phone and does not change the apps themselves; it only manages where they run.
Island vs paid app cloners
Most app cloners are closed-source and charge for the extra copies, and some wrap your app in a container you cannot see into. Island is free, open-source and uses the work profile that ships with Android itself, so there is no hidden layer to trust. If it saves you a second phone, the fair way to say thanks is to install it from Google Play or F-Droid and let the developer count the install.
